The documentary directed by Jennifer Callahan will air on Channel Thirteen (WNET) in the fall of 2010
NEW YORK, NY –July 1– Director Jennifer Callahan announces the premiere of her film, The Bungalows of Rockaway, at the Museum of the City of New York on July 29 at 6:30 pm and at the Queens Museum of Art on July 31 at 5:00 pm.
The documentary takes a modest subject — the small, affordable bungalows that once covered the Rockaway peninsula — and reveals larger themes in this singular story: working class leisure, public access to the ocean, community identity, and architectural preservation.
Interviews with bungalow residents, leading urban historians, and city officials are featured, including Kenneth Jackson and Andrew Dolkart of Columbia University; Queens historian Jeffrey Kroessler, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, and Amanda Burden, Chair of the New York City Planning Commission. Academy-Award-winning actress Estelle Parsons narrates.
A popular summer resort once existed along the Rockaway shore, the traces now found in the remaining bungalows and long boardwalk. Tracking the bungalow lifeline from 1905 to the present, The Bungalows of Rockaway blends gorgeous archival imagery with recent footage and interviews to produce an enlightening and entertaining look at an unsung chapter of New York history.
Rough-cut screenings of the film held in Manhattan, Queens and Long Island have attracted large and diverse audiences.
Directed by Jennifer Callahan and co-produced by Callahan and Elizabeth Logan Harris, The Bungalows of Rockaway will air on Channel Thirteen WNET in the fall of 2010.
Q & A with the filmmakers will follow all screenings.
