Specimen Days: Readings from Walt Whitman's Memoir

Whitman describes Specimen Days as a “huddle of diary-jottings, war-memoranda of 1862-’65, Nature-notes of 1877-’81, with Western and Canadian observations afterwards” and “the most wayward, spontaneous, fragmentary book ever printed.” This memoir is nonetheless an evocative and moving recollection of a great life. Members of the St. Francis College community will read selections concerning the poet in Brooklyn, the Civil War, and his life in post-war America. The readers are Ian S. Maloney, Ph.D., Assistant Academic Dean and the author of the introduction to the Barnes & Noble edition of Specimen Days; students Stefan Fagan, Noel T. Jones, Jaime Squeri; and guest participants Nicole Mitchell, Allison Rutledge, and Hakim Williams. Gregory F. Tague, Ph.D., is the event curator.

Whitman's Brooklyn

Whitman's Brooklyn http://www.whitmansbrooklyn.org Web designer Russell Granger has created "Whitman's Brooklyn," a website that vividly depicts the connection between Walt Whitman and the Brooklyn he knew of the 1850s. Many of the images on this website have never been published online before, and most have never been seen in such large format.

The site has been built in a format to enable visitors to participate by leaving comments, questions, ideas, and stories. Join in!
