Rapper/Producer Tahkyia Willis known as R.E.D. is a gifted music producer with a unique way of exemplifying music that not only captivates an audiences attention but also exceeds their expectations. By combining hard rock elements to smooth R&B and catchy hip hop beats, her musical style can be described as innovative, eclectic, and smooth and has been compared to the likes of Timbaland and Ryan Leslie.
Growing up in her hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts R.E.D. drew inspiration from both R&B songstress Aaliyah and music Legend Michael Jackson. "Michael Jackson has a song for every emotion and every situation, I instantly fell in love with his music and everything that he stands for. He is even the inspiration behind why I work with children today." She continues, "Aaliyah was the first artist that I identified myself with. I love her music and admire her beauty and poise. I always considered her a Real Elegant Dime, hence the name R.E.D."
It was during her two years as a DJ for local college radio WTCC when R.E.D. caught news of Aaliyah's sudden death. "I was completely shocked and devastated. I didn't want to accept it, it was like I had lost a family member." R.E.D. Along with singer Sunita Devi recorded a tribute song, entitled Angel or A Star, in which all proceeds were donated to Aaliyah's memorial fund for fans to host an annual rememberance in which R.E.D. still attends every year. She honed her skilled as a rapper and in honor of "Aaliyah The Babygirl" she established ATB Productions and moved to New York
Her talent as a rapper got her on the pilot "Joe Jackson's Hip Hop Boot Camp" where she made it to the finals and received a perfect ten from judges Marly Marl, Kurtis Blow, and Joe Jackon. Although the pilot was not picked up from networks, R.E.D. recalls "I look at the experience as a positive one, plus working with Joe Jackson was an honor being that I am a really huge fan of Michael Jackson."
While in New York, R.E.D. discovered her talent in music production and devoted all of her spare time toward the art. Arming herself with more knowledge, skills and equiptment, R.E.D. moved forward in music as a producer. But in 2009 she was hit with another tragedy, her childhood idol and ultimate musical influence had suddenly died. Michael Jackson's passing on June 25th would forever change the course of R.E.D.'s path. During her grievance she emersed herself with the life and legacy of Michael Jackson, and drew from it an inspiration that ignited a flame that carries on his message of L.O.V.E. that she keeps in her heart and shares through her music.
R.E.D. merged his initials with ATB and formed ATBMJ Productions. She has since went on to sell exclusive and non exclusive tracks as well as place her music on Bravo's The Real Housewives of Atlanta.She Is currently in the studio working on her first mixtape "The REDmix" set to be released later this summer.With future placements on the horizon and the summer release of "The REDmix", music producer R.E.D. aims to showcase her versitility in the urban and pop genre and bring a feel good twist to songs her fans will love.
