Eating out should be one of the small rewards of life

By Asheka Troberg

After a very customary good morning at the drive through, talking to the very McDonald’s like, colorful menu/micro phone at the fast-food burger joint, I ordered a black coffee with no sugar. The girl voice at the other side of the microphone politely told me to drive to the next window. As I approached the next window, the 18/19 years old girl (whom I had seen many a times before) smiled and said, she had suspected it was me just by the order of a black coffee with no sugar. I smiled back but sensed a smidgen of anxiousness for myself. Am I becoming so banal, predictable? I had always loved to be versatile and bold not giving into doing the same thing repetitively.

So I may have become some what banal when it comes to my caffeine boost, just in-order to avoid excessive sugar intake. It is not the same case with my food. There I am in constant mission of finding healthy delightful ambrosia. Like the fine harmony of instruments in Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road ensemble, the composition of ingredients of my chow must be set in fine exactness.

Eating out should be one of the small rewards of life. It should be a flavorsome experience in an aesthetic ambiance. As a whole it should be an entirely rewarding experience. While the window of choice may seem to get narrow when one has to watch calories and nutritional facts, healthy, tasty food are out there. One just has to know where and what. I am a food enthusiast who likes to eat healthy and tasty food. Thai food has a higher ranking in priority echelon of my food preference. I love the sweet-sour-spicy healthy cuisine. Thai food is one of the healthiest cuisines on our planet. That is most probably why this cuisine is rapidly getting popular among trendy yuppies, young modern people and not so young modern people. I fall in somewhere in those categories.

To-B-Thai is a mom-&-pop run Brooklyn eatery located at the corner of Beverly road and 2nd ave. I am frequenting this place these days. Knowing Brooklyn, like knowing any place should start with finding her fairest eateries. This little aesthetic restaurant is a petite gem that is actively contributing to Brooklyn’s (newest) borough defining cuisine. Though To-Be-Thai has started only about a year ago, they have already managed to become a favorite among many in the area. The chefs at To-Be-Thai boast that they do not use frozen vegetables. I got curious about that. I found out they get their fresh vegetable supply from a triangular island with abundance of produce. If you don’t believe me check it out for yourself. There is a small triangular island that stands in the junction of church ave , Beverly road and 2nd Street. McDonald’s fruit market occupies most of the space on that island. It’s a wonderful source for good vegetables.  To-B-Thai is just across the street from them. To-Be-Thai collects their fresh veggies from there any time of the day.

To-B-Thai may not teach one how to be a Thai but they serve outstandingly enticing, flavorful Thai food. Sitting at a candle lit table, by their glass walls I relish the anticipation of the arrival of my order.  The sound of chef’s utensils against the wok and the tantalizing flavor from the fabulous Thai food being cooked at the other side of the ceiling-high-stainless-steel serving shelf makes me hungrier. The atmosphere here is simple and genuinely Thai. The wait is undeniably rewarding.  The food is lean and healthy just like authentic Thai dishes.  The guests here seems to be true food enthusiast. The little blond boy who eats his chow with out any complain, sitting opposite to his young dad, is surely looks like a chow buff and destined to grow up as a true food enthusiast. A food enthusiast’s true joint, this place.

I spoke with the Thai couple chef-owners of the restaurant. Watcharee whom I call Cherry, does most of the talking for both Manit and herself. They both have tons of ideas for this place. I was amazed at their very innovative ideas regarding how to better accommodate their customers with better insight into Thai cuisine. Cooking is a passion for both of them and it runs in their family. Manit’s brother is a famous chef in Washington DC who owns Asia 9. Cherry and Manit plans to accommodate/entertain their customers who are interested in Thai cuisine with some new options. Cherry is very proud of their crew whom they call “The A team”. Cherry says she wants to maintain her restaurant simple and clean. I am sure you will enjoy having a spicy dinner at this place. Chances are you will keep coming back.
