THE CAUSE

Bangladesh has the worlds highest number of blind people compared to its population. World Sight Day 2009 revealed that 750,000 adults and 50,000  children are suffering from curable visual impairments. Major challenge lies in reaching out to the rural areas where eye care and treatment facilities are minimal, whereas 75% people could have their sight restored by cataract surgery and other timely interventions. Causes of child blindness are cataract due to vitamin A deficiency, Cornea infection and Glaucoma. Women and girls suffer in larger numbers. According to WHO, visual impairment is most prevalent in men and women of 50 and above and these are curable. Many organizations are engaged in eradication of eye impairment in Bangladesh, but the needs are far greater. It is in this back drop that Kurigram Trust has under taken from January 2010 Free Dristi-Protibondhi Chikitsha O Kollayan (DRICHIK) project.  The project will go on week by week over the years in Hospitals and Clinics as a continuous process. As more funds become available Drichik will be expanded to other Districts.
